Today was the start of our two day Pre-camp for Guard, Percussion, and Leadership. While I was initially disappointed by the lack of attendance, I must say that these kids are impressive!
After a brief introduction, we immediately jumped into team building Initiatives and games. It took a few tries for my students to open up and start making suggestions, but through some coaxing (and their own stubbornness) they began to try new things and come up with some pretty unique strategies.
We spent the day analyzing ourselves, owning our personal shortcomings and failures, and turned these flaws into positive determination that will fuel us for the rest of the season.
Among the goals that we set for the program today are things like: 100+ members, getting new guard equipment, learning to be better musicians, leaving our ego at the door, getting college scholarships, becoming a community that everyone can rely on, and even knocking out the back wall to expand the band room. (I may have also expressed interest in a coffee machine).
If today is any indication of how hard working and determined my new students are going to be, I can guarantee that great things are coming and all you other bands better watch out, because here we come!
